Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Looking for great sounding valves for Fender HotRod Deluxe amplifier? You’ve come to the right place.

Valves for Fender HotRod Deluxe amplifier.

The Fender HotRod Deluxe amplifier (whether the original amp, the MKII, the MKIII or the MKIV) all use:

  • 2 x ECC83 (also called 12AX7) preamp valves.
  • 1 x Balanced ECC83 (12AX7) for the phase inverter in position V3.
  • 2 x 6L6GC matched power valves/power tubes.

The V3 position is the preamp valve furthest from the input jack.

Remember, JJ are original manufacturers of valves so you are buying from the source. Don’t pay more for rebranded versions of exactly the same valves.

You can order these singly, the power valves as matched pairs, or a complete set. However, we strongly recommend you replace all your valves at the same time to get your amp sounding like it did when new.

If you need a service manual for this amp you can download it from here: http://www.tangible-technology.com/schematics/fender/hrd/Hot%20Rod%20Deluxe.pdf

Tubes for Fender amplifiers

If you need to reduce the power of your amp, add a 12AY7 to your order and use this in the V1 position instead of the stock 12AX7. (That’s the preamp valve position closest to the guitar input jack). The 12AY7 will reduce the gain of your amp by 50% but it will not alter the tone.

When you need to put the amp back to full power simply pop the 12AX7 back in place.

About the Fender HotRod Deluxe and Deluxe Mk111.

The Hot Rod Deluxe is a 40-watt single 12″ combo-the standard for gigging guitarists worldwide. It is famous for the low-end headroom characteristic of 6L6 tubes and a versatile all-ECC83 (12AX7) tube preamp.

It also boasts luscious Fender spring reverb, an effects loop and more.

So Fender approaches its series effects loop with two jacks titled Preamp Out and Power Amp In. Think of them as send and return respectively. You haven’t heard clean until you’ve heard it from a 6L6-equipped Fender amp! So, short of the hand-wired Custom stuff, this is as good a place as any to get it.

The Deluxe III’s normal channel has all the shimmer to make single-coils sparkle. The room-filling bass, coupled with the slightly “scoopy” mid-range that completes this sound.

HotRod Deluxe vs HotRod Deluxe MK111 vs MKIV.

The HotRod Deluxe was introduced in 1996 and ran through to 2009. Then, in 2010 Fender introduced the Hotrod Deluxe Mk111. The changes included:

  • Easier-reading black control panel.
  • Graduated volume and treble pot tapers.
  • “Tighter” overdrive.
  • Celestion G12P-80 speaker.
  • New low-profile “pedalboard-friendly” foot-switch.
  • Eminence loudspeaker replaced with a Celestion G12P.

In 2018 Fender introduced the HotRod Deluxe Mk IV with the following changes:

  • Pine cabinet to make it lighter.
  • White knobs (clearly identifying the new model).
  • A tamed reverb which is darker and less washy than the previous model.
