Description
Use a 12AY7 JJ valve to reduce your gain
This is the perfect preamp valve to use if your amp is too loud or you want more headroom. The 12AY7 will reduce overall gain for a cleaner, warmer and more mid-focused tone, even when the amp is pushed.
Many amps are simply too loud for use in a bedroom or small practice room, so this is the perfect solution.
Use it instead of the 12AX7 typically found in the V1 position. (You can also use it in the V2 and V3 positions on some amps but check what that valve function is first ).
This valve was designed specifically to reduce the gain without adding or subtracting from the original tone of your amp.
Some people use a 12AU7 or a 12AT7 and that will reduce gain a bit as well (not by as much as a 12AY7 though). However, there is a danger that the tone of the amp may be affected slightly by swapping for either of these two valves.
Get more headroom by using a 12AY7
This valve will also give you more headroom if you find that your amp is breaking up too soon. All in all a great valve to have in your collection and one that will fit just about every valve amp ever made.
This is also the perfect valve for harmonica players as it helps reduce feedback.
12AY7 Tube by JJ Electronics
The perfect valve to tame your amplifier without affecting the tone. This valve offers a 50% reduction in gain compared with a standard 12AX7 but keeps your amp sounding exactly as it should.
All of our valves are carefully selected, fully tested and graded. We use the most sophisticated testing equipment for every valve with 7 different quality assessments. This includes:
- Gain
- Transconductance
- Output
- Signal-to-noise
- Microphonics
- Cathode Test
- Grid Leakage and shorts
In addition we add 15 minutes of soak testing to reduce the number of failures in operation.
