Fender 57 Custom Twin Amp Reissue (2009 to present)
Best valves for Fender 57 Custom Twin Amp Reissue
The Fender ’57 Custom Twin Amp Reissue amplifier uses:
- 2 x 12AY7 preamp valves (see notes below).
- 1 x 12AX7 preamp valves (also called ECC83) for position V3.
- 1 x Balanced 12AX7 for the phase inverter in position V4.
- 2 x 5U4GB Rectifier Valves
- 2 x 6L6GC matched power valves/power tubes.
Notes on preamp valves.
Early versions of this amp used 4 x 12AX7 preamp valves.
Later versions (from 2013) replaced the first 12AX7 in the V1 (and sometimes the 2nd preamp valve position (V2) with a low gain 12AY7 preamp valve.
This reduces the gain by about 50%.
Both valves work equally well and there is no difference in tone, just power. It’s very much personal taste as to which combination you think works best. They all sound amazing so you won’t be disappointed but you may want to play around a bit to experiment.
If you wish, Fender says you can use the 12AY7 valve in the first three positions to reduce the gain even further. The fourth preamp valve should be a balanced 12AX7 for the phase inverter in position V4.

What Fender say about the amp
The ’57 Twin amplifier—one of the most collectable amps of all time—is the latest member of our acclaimed Custom Series family. Its harmonically rich clean tones are great for vintage rock, blues and country; crank it up for fat, sophisticated distortion.
This all-tube combo amp has hand-wired circuitry; we’ve even reproduced the 1955-57 edition “low powered” 5E8A circuit, which puts 40 watts into a pair of 12” alnico-magnet speakers.
Power comes from a pair of 6L6 output tubes and Fender’s rarely seen mid-’50s dual rectifier arrangement (using 5U4 rectifier tubes). With this design, power amp compression or “sag” is more subtle than in many Fender tweed designs.
The Twin’s preamp contains four high-gain 12AX7 tubes, three of which may be substituted with 12AY7s for the original ’50s low-gain sound.
An internal bias pot allows easy substitution of various 6L6 types. Control panel details include normal and bright volumes, four inputs (two normal; two bright), treble, bass and presence knobs.
