The TLA 5021 uses 2 x preamp valves as well having a solid state section.
This is what TLA say about the valves:
“We use only two types of valve – one is the ECC83 dual triode valve (also known as the 12AX7) and the other is the EF86 pentode valve (also known as the EF806 or 6267). The EF86 is used only in the preamp stage of the PA-1 and VP-1 models, while every other model uses the ECC83/12AX7 only.
The discussion around which is the best valve, for any piece of kit, has filled the forums for years.
If you are happy with the sound of the original Sovteks then we would suggest staying with them. However some owners have found the Sovteks to be a bit noisy and prefer the JJ ECC83 or Electro Harmonix 12AX7 instead.
Note for the purists: The Electro Harmonix EH7025 is also a 12AX7/ECC83 but is manufactured to be super quiet so is well worth considering.
The JJ Electronics ECC83 also has a very strong following so we also offer those valves.
It’s well worth looking to see what valves are in your compressor BEFORE you order so at least you know what you are currently using.
When it comes to the EF86/806 tube used in the PA-1 and VP-1 we particularly like the Svetlana EF86 or the JJ EF806. Both makes deliver excellent results.
