Best valves for Supro 1610B Comet amplifiers

The original Supro 1610B Comet amplifier from the 1950s uses:

1 x 6SL7 OR ECC83 preamp valve (also called 12AX7). Supro switched from using the 6SL7 to the ECC83 around 1959.
1 x 5Y3S rectifier valve.
1 x 6V6S power valve/power tubes.

The change in preamp valve to ECC83 can be solved by using a relatively cheap adapter that switches from 8 pin to 9 pin.

Our photo above shows the 1953 version and later on the housing was replaced with a more modern-looking design (see photo further down).

About the amp

The oldest versions we have seen date back to 1953 when the amp first appeared in the Supro catalogue. Originally it would have used a 6SL7 preamp tube in the V1 position but this is often replaced with an ECC83 (12AX7) these days.

Later versions, like the 1959 model shown above suggests a 12AX7 or a 12AD7 although the 12AD7 was only produced in very limited numbers.

In 2017 the Comet was re-released as the 1610RT Comet – this time with 5 valves.
