valves for Marshall 6100

Marshall 6100 and 6101

Looking for great sounding valves for your Marshall 6100 amplifier? Great – you’ve come to the best place. We hold stock for JJ, Marshall and EH valves for this amp.

Valves for Marshall 6100 amplifiers.

The Marshall 6100 (head version) and 6101 (combo) amplifier use:

  • 6 x ECC83 (also called 12AX7) preamp valves.
  • 1 x balanced ECC83 for the phase splitter in position V7.
  • and ….. then it gets complicated.

The power valves on these amps vary a great deal. A shortage of EL34s meant Marshall had to make a change in the power valves used in the manufacture of this amplifier.

As a result, your 6100, 6101, 6101, 6101LM and 30th Anniversary could have:

  • 4 x EL34 matched power valves or
  • 4 x 5881 matched power valves or
  • 4 x 6L6GC matched power valves.

We have seen all of the above in these amps so check before ordering to see what you have inside your amp. Some amps have 5881 stickers on them but were fitted with 6L6GC valves. If you didn’t buy the amp from new, there’s also the possibility that conversion was done by the previous owner.

Over time your valves will lose their tone and their power. A brand new set of valves will get your amp sounding like new again.

About the amp:

The 6100 is the head version and the 6101 is the combo. They were made in 1992 and featured blue Tolex and white lettering. Later that year Marshall changed it to black Tolex.

In 1983, the closure of the Tesla valve factory meant there was a global shortage of EL34 power valves and so the model was re-engineered to take other power valves. I’m sure this is something Jim Marshall would not have been keen to do.
