Best valves for Vox AC30 TBR amplifier

Vox AC30 TBR

Best valves for Vox AC30 TBR (1988-1993)

The Vox AC30 TBR (standard version with reverb, model 1007) amplifier uses:

  • 7 x ECC83 preamp valves (also called 12AX7).
  • 1 x Balanced ECC83 for the phase inverter (in position V8).
  • 4 x EL84 matched power valves/power tubes.

Note: The balanced ECC83 goes in the V8 position which is the preamp valve furthest from your input jack.

A brand-new set of valves will get your amp sounding better than ever.

We always recommend JJ valves for this amplifier. This is because they guarantee you get awesome tone and long life and they don’t cost a fortune.

Remember, JJ is one of only five manufacturers in the world. So don’t pay higher prices for valves from the same factory that have simply been rebranded by other companies.

About the amp

This model was built for Vox in the UK, from 1988 to 1993, by Precision Electronics in Wellingborough. Vox claimed at the time that it used the same circuitry as the original AC30. It has since been argued that wasn’t true – but it was very close.

It was fitted with Celestion G12M Green Back Speakers and featured the words “Vox AC30 Top Boost” on the control panel which may help with identification.

Other identifying features are that it has Top Boost tone controls in the Brilliant channel and a distinctive red and green stripe on the foot-pedal.

It was not offered without reverb which was quite unusual.
