Best valves for Mesa Boogie MKIIC amplifier

Mesa Boogie Mark II

Best valves for Mesa Boogie MKII amplifiers

The Mesa Boogie MKII 60w amplifier uses:

  • 3 x ECC83 preamp valves (also called 12AX7).
  • 1 x Balanced ECC83 for the phase inverter (in position V5).
  • 1 x ECC81 (12AT7) or ECC83 for the reverb (see below).
  • 2 x 6L6GC matched power valves/power tubes (see below).

A word of warning. There are dozens of variations of valves used on the Mark II during its 7 years of production so you must check what is inside your amp before you place your order. Here are some of the common variations you should look for:

  • Some use an ECC83/12AX7 for the reverb in position V4 while others use an ECC81/12AT7. This is often written on the chassis in black felt tip pen as well.
  • Some are 60w/100w switchable and will need 4 x 6L6GC power valves.
  • Some of the later models are simulcast and will use both 6L6GC and EL34 power valves.

The one thing they all have in common is that balanced ECC83 goes in the V5 position which is the preamp valve furthest from your input jack.

A brand-new set of valves will get your amp sounding better than ever.

We always recommend JJ valves for this amplifier. This is because they guarantee you get awesome tone and long life and they don’t cost a fortune.

Remember, JJ is one of only five manufacturers in the world. So don’t pay higher prices for valves from the same factory that have simply been rebranded by other companies.

About the amp

The Mesa Boogie MKII is an extremely sought after amplifier these days. It was originally launched in 1978 and was the first amp to offer channel switching. Between 1978 and 1985 when the MKII came out there were four variations of this amp as Mesa rolled out various upgrades:

1978: The original MKII which would later be called the MKIIa

1980: The MKIIb – now with the first ever effects loop.

1983: The MKIIc – around 1,400 of these were produced before the a company upgrade saw the release of the MKIIc+

1984 (Jan) – 1985 (Mar) – the now highly sought after MKIIc+
