I recently purchased a replacement tube set for my Line 6 DT25 Head amp from Ampvalves. The website is very user-friendly and makes it easy to find the perfect tube set for your amp. Due to an error by the parcel service, my shipment did not find its way to me. After contacting the support, I was helped immediately and competently. The quality of service was truly exceptional and exceeded my expectations. A special thanks to Barry Tyler. Hey Barry, you did a very good job. The tube set arrived afterwards in excellent condition, exactly as described on the website. The quality is remarkable. It’s well worth the money for their high-quality tubes. I highly recommend the tubes from Ampvalves. Also, my amp gives grateful feedback with a wonderful fresh sound. Alex from Switzerland

Amazingly helpful, truly above and beyond with their customer experience. I was pretty stuck, through my own fault, and still they went the extra mile to get me back up and running. Thank you so much.

Excellent place to grab your amp valves. Great choice of valves, amazing customer service and prompt responses to queries via email. I was unsure of the best valves to use for my amp and sound, they gave me great advice. When I ordered the valves I used the wrong delivery option and they even sorted that out for me. Highly recommended.

The 5881 is the power valve people fit when a standard 6L6 feels a size too big for the way they actually play. It is the same family of tube. It uses the same octal base, it works in the same push-pull output stage, and it was brought out in 1954 as a shorter, tougher version of the 6L6. The difference that makes someone choose it is the rating. A 5881 is rated at about 23 watts of plate dissipation. A 6L6GC is rated at about 30 watts. That seven watts is why the two valves do not feel the same once the amp is turned up.

A 6L6GC is built to sit at a higher plate voltage and to stay clean further up the dial. A 5881 reaches the edge of its rating sooner, so the power stage starts to compress a little earlier. That is the sound buyers are after. Not a different circuit, and not a preamp swap, but the output valves working a bit closer to their limit at the volume they already use. The usual description, and it is a fair one, is a tone between a 6L6 and a 6V6. More headroom than a 6V6, less stiffness than a 6L6GC, and a rounder onset of breakup. Fender fitted 5881s in the 1959 Bassman, and that amp is still the reference. If you want that era of American power-stage tone rather than a stiff modern clean, the 5881 is the valve in this family that gets you there.

The glass is part of the choice as well. A 5881 is a squatter bottle than a 6L6GC. In a combo with little room under the chassis, or a head where a tall bottle sits close to the cabinet or the screening, the shorter envelope is a practical reason to buy it, not just a look.

It is not a valve you drop in and forget. Any amplifier built for a 6L6 can usually take a 5881, but the 5881 will not accept the plate voltage a 6L6GC is happy with. If the amp was not designed for 5881s, have a technician measure the plate voltage before you fit them, and rebias afterwards. A bias point set for 6L6GC plates will run a 5881 too hot, and a hot 5881 is a short-lived 5881. The two valves in a push-pull pair share the speaker load, one pushing and one pulling. If they are not matched, one side idles harder than the other and does more of the work. That is why a matched pair, or a matched quad in a four-valve amp, matters more here than it does with a valve that has dissipation to spare.

Older 5881s were made in the United States by GE, RCA, Sylvania and Westinghouse. Those bottles are part of the history of the type. They are a poor plan if you need a set you can buy again next year and bias the same way. Current production is what makes a revalve predictable. JJ Electronics still makes the 5881, to a known rating, in a known bottle, with a known pinout. One valve matches the next, and a pair bought together was matched together. That consistency is the reason JJ is the 5881 we stock. You are not gambling on leftover glass of unknown hours. You are fitting a new valve of the type the amp, or the tech, has just been set up for.

We keep three JJ options, all tested before they are dispatched. A single 5881 is the right buy only when you are replacing one failed valve and the other is recent and known. For a two-valve 6L6 amp, buy the matched pair, so both sides of the output stage are the same valve at the same idle. For a four-valve amp, including the classic Bassman layout of two plus two, buy the matched quad. A quad is not two pairs that happen to be in the same box. It is four valves matched as one set, which is what a four-valve bias supply expects. Every order goes out by tracked delivery.

If the amp can run either type and you are still deciding, use the rating rather than a forum post. Choose the 5881 when you want that earlier compression, the shorter bottle fits, and you are willing to bias for about 23 watts and to have the plate voltage checked. Choose a 6L6GC when the plate voltage is high, or when you want the extra dissipation and the cleaner headroom that comes with it. The two are compared in more detail in our guide to 5881 and 6L6GC differences.

When you are ready to revalve, the JJ Electronics sets are on the 5881 valve category page, as a tested single, a matched pair and a matched quad.
