About this amp
The HGT-A40 has gained a loyal following. It is a lovely 40 watt amplifier essentially based around three channels.
This affords a great deal of control and flexibility but it’s important to understand how the three channels work. Like Mesa amps, this takes a bit of thinking about, but it’s worth the effort because this amp delivers it’s own very special tones.
The front panel knobs are labelled as ‘Clean’ and, ‘Gain One and Two’.
Meanwhile, the three channels are called One, Two and Three, with channel selection buttons for ‘One and Two’, and ‘Two and Three’. Once you’ve got your head round that it all starts to make sense.
‘Gain One’ controls the gain in channel Two, selected by pushing button ‘One and Two’ on the front panel.
“Gain Two “controls the gain in channel Three, selected by pushing ‘Two and Three’.
Hayden say that channel Three is cascaded from channel Two (hence the ‘Two and Three’ designation), yet “Gain one” – which, as mentioned above works in channel Two – has no effect when you’re in channel three.
I know, it’s not the sort of thing you can speed read.
It’s probably easier to think in terms of ‘Clean’, ‘Crunch’ and ‘Lead’.
The important thing to remember is that the crunch and lead channels have their own dedicated gain and master volume controls.
As mentioned earlier, the Hayden has a unique tone that is neither Fender or Marshall or Vox and that appeals to a lot of guitarists out there.
