Westminster MKII
Watkins/WEM Westminster MKII amplifier
The MKII version of this amplifier was introduced in the mid-1960s and uses:
- 1 x 12AX7 (ECC83) for the tremolo.
- 1 x EZ80 for the rectifier.
- 2 x ECL82 for the phase inverter and power output.
For our tube kit we have chosen what we believe is the best possible valves to get the amp sounding its very best. We also stock other makes if you have a specific preference.
Valves for the Watkins/WEM Westminster MKII amp
The Watkins/WEM Westminster amplifier came in over 20 different versions. Some are merely cosmetic changes are repositioning of carrying handles whilst others are significantly changed.
Production of the Westminster started sometime around 1954 and ran up to the late 1970s. Here are some of the models we have seen:
- 1954/55
- 1956. Red Star: Red and cream, with speed and depth controls. 10 watts.
- 1956. Black Star. Black and cream.
- 1956 V Front 15 watts. Two channels. Twin 10″ Elac speakers. It uses 2 x EF86, 2 x ECC83 valves and 2 x EL84 power valves.
- 1957/58 Maroon and cream. It uses the same valves as the MKII – see below.
- Late 1950s. 2 channel input. Uses EL90 power valves rather than EL84.
- 1960/61-1964. 2 channel 14 watt. 3 x ECC83, 1 x EZ81 and 2 x EL84.
- 1960-1962. 2 channel. 14-watt V Front.
- 1961/62. Changed instrument panel.
- 1962. 10 watt. Same valves as the MKII.
- Mid Sixties. MKII now with complete WEM rebranding.
- Early 1970s. 10-watt solid state.
- 1972 to late 70s. Valves again but solid state rectifier. 1 x 12AX7 and 2 x ECL82.
- Mid 1970s.Bass version with upgraded 12″ speaker.
- Late 1970s 15 watt with treble boost.
In 2014 a reissue appeared. It was manufactured by John Beer of Amp-Fix in Devon and approved by Charlie Watkins.
