Valves For Fender Valve Guitar Amplifier

Fender Twin Reverb Blackface and Silverface (1963-1982)

Looking for great sounding valves for Fender Twin Reverb amplifier? You’ve come to the right place.

Valves for Fender Twin Reverb Amplifier.

The Fender Twin Reverb (Blackface and Silverface versions) and the Fender Twin Reverb 1965 Reissue amplifier use:

  • 4 x 7025 or ECC83 (also called 12AX7) preamp valves for positions V1, V2, V4 and V5.
  • 1 x ECC81 (12AT7) preamp valve for position V3.
  • 1 x ECC81 balanced valve for position V6.
  • 4 x 6L6GC matched power valves.

If you need valves for a Fender Twin Reverb II you will need a different set which can be found here.

Originally this amp was supplied with 4 x 7025 preamp valves which are low hum and low noise versions of the ECC83.

Many people use the readily available ECC83 (which is used in every valve amp ever made) but purists love the original 7025 for its low noise. If you find your amp is a little noisier than you would like, try the 7025, particularly for the V1 position.

About the Fender Twin Reverb.

The Fender Twin Reverb amplifier has seen action in every imaginable venue. It was launched in 1963 and still remains a favourite to this day. So be it rock, jazz, country or anything else, this is what a clean electric guitar sounds like. It has been described as the cleanest sounding amp in the world. But don’t forget your pedals will add as much dirt as you like.

There have been many variations of this amp but they all use the same valves listed above.

1963 – 1967: The Blackface rated at 85W

1968: Launch of the silver face rated at 100W.

There were manufacturing variations made in 1969, 1970 and then in 1972. The most obvious variation in 1972 was the addition of a master volume control.

1977 to 1982: A different transformer boosted the output to a claimed 135w but still using the same valves.

1992: The latest variation is the 85-watt reissue ’65 Fender Twin Reverb. This was launched in 1992 and still features four 6L6GC output tubes, four 12AX7 (ECC83) preamp tubes, and two 12AT7 (ECC81) preamp tubes.

In addition, you get two 12” 8-ohm Jensen C-12K speakers. Other features include dual channels (normal and vibrato), Fender reverb, vibrato, two-button reverb and vibrato on-off foot-switch, tilt-back legs, black textured vinyl covering and silver grille cloth.
