best valves for Fender Bassman Blonde

Fender Bassman Blonde 1962-1964

Best valves for Fender Bassman Blonde 1962-1964

The Fender Bassman Blonde amplifier produced from 1962 – 1964 uses:

  • 3 x 7025/ECC83 preamp valves (also called 12AX7).
  • 1 x Balanced 7025 for the phase inverter (in position V4).
  • 2 x 6L6GC matched power valves/power tubes

Note: The balanced 7025/ECC83 goes in the V4 position which is the preamp valve furthest from your input jack.

A brand new set of valves will get your amp sounding better than ever.

We always recommend JJ valves for this amplifier. This is because they guarantee you get awesome tone and long life and they don’t cost a fortune.

Remember, JJ is one of only five manufacturers in the world. So don’t pay higher prices for valves from the same factory that have simply been rebranded by other companies.

Useful info about the amp

There’s a lot of discussion regarding whetrher you should use 6L6GC or 5881 valves in this amp. Here is one forum that’s worth a look at and I’m sure you will find more:

https://www.lespaulforum.com/index.php?threads/tung-sol-5881s-worth-it.86110.

We can supply both 6L6GC or 5881 valves.

Early versions from 1962 were available with either solid state phase inverters and valve phase inverters. So if yours has an extra valve you know why.

A ’63 or ’64 should be a blonde Bassman, otherwise known as model 6G6-B. This circuit used four 7025 tubes for the preamp and the phase inverter.

7025 is just another name for 12AX7 or ECC83.

In 1964 Fender changed the Bassman to the AA864 circuit. These amps used three 7025 preamp tubes and one 12AT7 (ECC81) phase inverter tube.

The acid test then is does it have a Presence control? If so, it’s a 6G6-B and you need four 12AX7 tubes. If it has no presence control, it’s probably an AA864 and you need three 12AX7 tubes plus one 12AT7.
