Valves for Cornford Harlequin amplifier

Cornford Harlequin Mark 1

Valves for Cornford Harlequin Mark 1 amplifier.

The Cornford Harlequin amplifier uses:

  • 1 x ECC83 (also called 12AX7) preamp valve.
  • 1 x Balanced ECC83 for the phase inverter in position V2.
  • 1 x EL84 power valve/power tube.

Note: The balanced ECC83 goes in position V2 which is the ECC83 that is furthest from the input jack.

Over time your valves will lose their tone and their power. A brand new set of valves will get your amp sounding better than ever.

We always recommend Sovtek or JJ valves for this amplifier. This is because they guarantee you get awesome tone and long life and they don’t cost a fortune. Remember, Sovtek is one of only five manufacturers of valves in the world. So don’t pay higher prices for valves from the same factory that have simply been rebranded by other companies.

About the amp

The Cornford Harlequin is a hand-wired, 6-Watt “recording amplifier”. The Cornford company is, unfortunately no longer with us, but the amps they produced are now very desirable items.

The Harlequin has a stripped-down design that uses two ECC83s (12AX7s) and a single EL84 power valve. The controls include Pre-amp Volume, Treble, Bass, Master Volume, Voice switch, Hi and Low inputs.

One of the biggest problems with some Class-A (and most Class-AB) guitar amps is that they tend to sound unnaturally buzzy and grainy when driven too hard. In contrast, the Harlequin blends power-amp and front-end tube distortion to produce manageable, pleasing, and smooth tones-even when driven hard.

The Harlequin has no clean tones to speak of, but its wide range of overdriven tube sounds are the reason guitarists love this amp.
